Whichever card you have can be used for travel with any GrassHOPPER operator. If you don’t already have a smartcard you can get one from your favourite bus operator. First Bus cards are available from their Travel Shop on Union Street, or for any other operators simply ask the bus driver when you are buying your GrassHOPPER ticket. Once you have a smartcard you can re-use it again and again, so don’t throw it away when your ticket expires.
If you have a ScotRail smartcard you can use this to purchase GrassHOPPER tickets from GrassHOPPER bus operators.
It is a plastic card – a form of electronic ticket, with an embedded microchip that stores your travel tickets. Smartcards are re-usable and can be loaded on bus with smart tickets including Smart GrassHOPPER Day or Weekly passes.
There is a 50p charge for a Stagecoach Smartcard. The other cards are issued free of charge.
You can choose to register your smartcard with the operator who issued it.
GrassHOPPER tickets are currently priced for adults and students.
Children aged under five travel for free when accompanied by an adult.
When you board the bus place your card onto the ticket reader and tell the driver where you are going. The driver can tell whether there is a smart GrassHOPPER ticket already on the card.
Simply place your smartcard onto the ticket reader and tell the driver which GrassHOPPER ticket you require. The driver will then load the new ticket onto the smartcard.
We currently only accept cash payments on bus.

If you have lost a StagecoachSmart card that was registered with Stagecoach call 01224 591381 or email email@example.com. If you have lost a First Touch card that was registered with First call 0345 602 0121 If you have lost a smartcard registered with GrassHOPPER call 01467 533080 or email firstname.lastname@example.org. Otherwise simply ask your bus driver for a new smartcard. If there is a GrassHOPPER Day or Weekly ticket on the lost smartcard it cannot be replaced or refunded. If you are using a ScotRail smartcard and need to replace it call ScotRail on 0344 811 0141 or email customer.relations@ScotRail.co.uk
If you have a GrassHOPPER ticket on your smartcard the driver will ask you for the receipt that was issued to you at the time of purchase. The driver will use this to check if there is a valid ticket on your card. If the driver cannot verify that a valid ticket is on your card you will be asked to pay.
Yes, you can use it for First and Stagecoach smart tickets. You can also use it to purchase some ScotRail tickets – you can check which tickets by calling ScotRail on 0344 811 0141.

If your smartcard was issued by another operator you may choose to register it by emailing your card number, name and address to email@example.com. You should show a current university/college matriculation photo ID card for North East Scotland College (NESCOL), Robert Gordon University, the University of Aberdeen, the Aberdeen campus of Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC) or a valid NUS Extra card.
